World Youth Boxing Championship in Baku
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Youth Championship was held in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku from 22nd of April to 4th of May 2010. The only qualifying event for the 1st historic Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August 2010 has gathered the record high 96 countries and 466 boxers of all five continents of the planet. The World Championship was attended by Mr. Gafur Rakhimov as the AIBA Executive Vice-president along with many distinguished guests from IOC and other sport organizations. Mr. Rakhimov had a meeting with the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Mr. Heydarov as well as the other members of the LOC and expressed the gratitude on behalf of AIBA for the well-organized World Youth Boxing Championships. Each boxer gave all his strength to advance to the semi-final phase to gain the Olympic license as only the medalists of the World Youth Championships will have the right to participate in the Games 3 months later in Singapore. According to the regulations it is limited to 3 boxers per country to participate in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, and only 5 countries of the world obtained the 100% of qualified athletes to represent their countries, which are Cuba, Russia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Germany. The team of Uzbekistan of 10 boxers gained 2 silver medals in 69 kg and 81 kg as well as 1 bronze medal in 48 kg weight category respectively and ranked the 7th in the medals standings. The boxing competitions at the Youth Olympic Games will be held on August 20th to 25th this year in Singapore. The opening of the YOG will take place on 14th of August.
